Louise Cort
The Six Ancient Kilns, SHIGARAKI, Potters' Valley
Louise Cort (Curator)
Born and raised in the US, Louise first came to Japan as a high school exchange student. She studied Japanese art history as a graduate student at Oxford University, and in 1967 she returned for her second stay. After coming across Shigaraki ware and other medieval Japanese ceramics, she chose Shigaraki as the subject for her master's thesis. She continued investigating the topic even after completing her thesis, and in 1979 she published her book, Shigaraki, Potter’s Valley, through Kodansha International.
Louise's book swiftly spread the story of Shigaraki ware abroad. In 1981 she became a curator for the Smithsonian Institution's two museums dedicated to Asian art, the Freer Gallery of Art and the Sackler Gallery, specializing in ceramics. Her research encompasses historical and modern-day ceramics in Japan, Southeast Asia, and South Asia, as well as Japanese bamboo ware, weaving, and tea ceremony. Even now, she continues making visits to Shigaraki to understand how this community is evolving.
